The World’s Tallest Tree: Meet Hyperion, Nature’s Sky-High Giant

Discovered in 2006 deep within California’s Redwood National Park, Hyperion is a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) measuring a breathtaking 380.1 feet tall. That’s taller than the Statue of Liberty and it’s still growing!

Hyperion’s record-breaking height comes down to a few key factors:

  • Perfect climate: California’s coastal fog keeps redwoods hydrated year-round.
  • Rich soil: Deep, moist soil full of nutrients supports massive root systems.

Scientists estimate Hyperion to be around 600–800 years old which is practically middle-aged for a redwood!

A Tree with a Secret Location

Unlike many famous landmarks, you won’t find Hyperion listed on any tourist map. The National Park Service has kept its exact location a secret to protect it from foot traffic and damage. Sadly, even limited human visitors have caused harm to the area around it, so the site is now closed to the public. This decision helps preserve not just Hyperion, but the fragile ecosystem of ferns, mosses, and young redwoods that share its home.

Tall Trees Closer to Home

Here in the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia area, we don’t have redwoods but we do have some impressive native giants. Local species like tulip poplars, white oaks, and sycamores can reach 100 feet or more when properly cared for.

If you’ve ever admired those towering trees that shade local parks or line old neighborhoods, you know just how majestic mature trees can be. And while we may not have Hyperion’s foggy coastal habitat, we can still help our local trees live long, strong, and healthy lives.

Keeping Your Own Giants Healthy

Even smaller trees need big care. Regular tree pruning, health assessments, and soil care can make the difference between a thriving tree and one that struggles.

That’s where we come in, at Titan Tree Care, our certified arborists help homeowners keep their trees safe, beautiful, and strong. Whether your trees are young and growing or mature and stately, we’re here to help them stand tall.

Fun Fact:

If Hyperion were in the DC area, it would tower over the Washington Monument and would still have room to spare!
