July Tree of the Month: Tulip Poplar
If you’ve walked through Rock Creek Park or admired the leafy canopies of the DMV suburbs, chances are you’ve spotted a Tulip Poplar (also called the Tuliptree or Yellow Poplar). Despite the name, this isn’t a true poplar, it’s actually part of the magnolia family. Known for its stately height, distinct tulip-shaped flowers, and fast growth, this native tree is a true gem in our region.

What Makes the Tulip Poplar So Special?
1. A Tree That Grows with You
The Tulip Poplar is a fast grower, which makes it a great option if you’re hoping to establish shade or privacy quickly. Unlike many other quick-growing trees, it also offers strong wood and long-term value, making it a favorite among homeowners who want both beauty and function.
2. Blooming Beauty: The Tulip-Like Flowers
In late spring, this tree puts on a dazzling display of tulip-shaped flowers that attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. These blooms don’t just look pretty—they also signal a healthy and mature tree. Even the leaves resemble tulips, adding to the charm.
3. Wildlife Love It Too
The Tulip Poplar is a favorite among wildlife. Birds nest in its tall branches, and its flowers provide nectar for bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Deer typically avoid it, which makes it a smart choice in areas with heavy browsing.
Care Tips
- Prune in winter to remove dead or crossing branches
- Mulch the base (but avoid piling mulch against the trunk!)
