Fall Backyard Bucket List: 10 Things to Do Before Winter
Summer may be over, but don’t put the backyard away just yet.
Fall is one of the best times of year to enjoy your outdoor space. The air is cooler, the leaves are putting on a show, and there’s something about a crisp autumn evening that makes sitting around a fire feel like the perfect place to be.
Before winter arrives and sends everyone indoors, why not make the most of it?
We’ve put together a Fall Backyard Bucket List with 12 things worth doing before the season disappears.
How many can you check off?
1. Have One More Dinner Outside
You don’t need a fancy outdoor kitchen or elaborate setup. Grab a blanket, light a few lanterns, and enjoy dinner outside while you still can. Pizza, chili, burgers or takeout all taste a little better when you’re eating beneath the fall sky.
2. Have a Backyard Bonfire
This one practically demands to be on the list.
Gather some friends or family, build a safe fire, grab the blankets and settle in for an evening outside. Bonus points for s’mores.
3. Make Something Warm to Drink
Hot apple cider. Hot chocolate. Coffee. Tea.
Whatever your favorite is, take it outside and enjoy it while sitting around the fire or watching the leaves change.
4. Decorate Your Backyard for Fall
Pumpkins don’t have to stop at the front porch.
Add a few pumpkins or gourds to your patio, outdoor table or garden areas. Mums, lanterns, baskets and fall-colored accents can instantly make your outdoor space feel seasonal. And remember: there is no such thing as too many pumpkins.
5. Watch the Sunset
As the days get shorter, sunset arrives at a much more reasonable hour.
Find your favorite outdoor chair, grab a drink and take a few minutes to simply watch the sky change. No phone. No to-do list. Just enjoy it.
6. Take a Family Photo
You know that perfect fall photo you’ve been meaning to take? Now’s the time.
Use the colorful trees as your backdrop, gather everyone together and take advantage of the season’s natural scenery. Pets count as family members too.
7. Plant Something for Spring
Here’s one bucket-list item that actually looks ahead.
Fall is an excellent time to plant many spring-flowering bulbs, including tulips, daffodils and crocuses. There’s something pretty satisfying about doing a little work now and knowing you’ll be rewarded with color when spring arrives.
8. Put Out a Bird Feeder
As temperatures drop, your backyard can become an important food source for local birds.
Adding a bird feeder is an easy way to bring a little more wildlife into your outdoor space—and it’s entertaining to see who shows up.
Just be prepared. Once the birds find it, word travels fast.
9. Give the Yard a Fall Cleanup
Okay, we had to sneak one responsible item onto the list.
Before winter settles in, take some time to tidy up your outdoor space. Put away summer toys and equipment, clean up garden areas, inspect outdoor furniture and remove branches or debris that could become a problem during winter weather.
And don’t forget to take a look at your trees.
10. Spend One Night Outside Just Because You Can
This may be the most important one.
Pick a crisp autumn evening, grab a blanket, turn on the lights and sit outside.
You don’t need guests. You don’t need a reason. Sometimes the best way to enjoy your backyard is simply to stop and enjoy it.
How Many Did You Check Off?
Fall doesn’t last forever.
Before the leaves are gone and the temperatures send us all searching for our favorite sweatshirts, take a little time to enjoy the outdoor space you’ve worked so hard to maintain.
Have the bonfire. Make the cider. Take the picture. Watch the sunset. Let the kids jump in the leaves.
