A Blue Ribbon Kind of Day: The DC State Fair Returns

Did you know Washington, DC has its very own state fair? That’s right—the District might not technically be a state, but since 2010, the DC State Fair has been celebrating all things homegrown, handmade, and downright delicious.

What started with three local food and garden bloggers looking to showcase community talent has now grown into a beloved annual tradition. The fair is free, volunteer-led, and a perfect mix of the quirky, creative, and classic. Think: blue ribbons for the Best Honey, Best Houseplant, and (our personal favorite) Funkiest Looking Vegetable.

This year’s fair will be held on Saturday, September 6, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Bryant Street NE. It’s a full day of contests, exhibits, food, and neighborly fun—all dedicated to the unique spirit of the District.

What Makes the DC State Fair Special?

Unlike the giant state fairs you may have seen in Iowa or Texas, the DC version has its own flair:

Agricultural Showdowns – From the Heaviest Vegetable to the Best Garden Haul, it’s proof that even in an urban city, gardens thrive. (Shoutout to all the balcony and backyard gardeners keeping DC green!)

Tomato Royalty – Categories include Best Red Tomato, Best Heirloom Tomato, and the brand-new Best Cucumber. Because nothing says summer quite like bragging rights for your homegrown produce.

Sweet and Savory Competitions – Bakers, brewers, and sauce-makers get their moment in the spotlight with contests ranging from Best Chocolate Cake to Best Mumbo Sauce (a DC original). And yes, there’s a Pie Eating Contest.

Arts & Creativity – Beyond food and farming, the fair celebrates DC’s artistic side with contests for ceramics, knitting, photography, poetry, and even slime-making for kids.

A Nod to Nature – With new categories like Best Pollinator/Native Garden and Best Houseplant, the fair highlights how important plants and green spaces are to city life—something we at Titan Tree Care can definitely get behind!

Why We Love It

At Titan Tree Care, we spend our days helping DC’s trees stay healthy and strong—but the fair reminds us that the District’s roots run deep in creativity and community too. Whether you’re entering a contest, cheering on neighbors, or just there for the cider and mac and cheese, the fair is a joyful celebration of what it means to be part of this city.
